Eleni Theocharous, Member of the European Parliament, Foreword’s Abstract:
I consider that all issues can be solved peacefully and through democratic dialogue by using the values and principles upon which the European Union is founded as a basis. Turkey is a large country that affects and is affected by European Affairs. This journal constitutes a sincere effort toward the establishment of a political strategy of common understanding.
Stefan’s Füle, Commissioner of Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, Preface’s Abstract:
At the Helsinki 1999 European Council, Member States declared that Turkey is “destined to join the Union on the basis of the same criteria as applied to the other Candidate States”. This position has been reconfirmed on many occasions until the opening of the negotiations in 2005. Turkey’s accession is now facing a challenging face. Negotiations have slowed down. Turkey has to made further progress regarding the respect of fundamental rights, in particular as regards freedom of expression, minority rights and freedom of religion. In this context, political reforms remain at the core of the accession process.
